"I want to build a playground for ALL kids to play on. I want a playground where able bodied kids, kids in wheelchairs, kids with bracing and walkers, blind kids can play together. Any child deserves to be a child and should be given the opportunity to play with their peers, to laugh, make friends, build confidence and to explore the world. I envision a playground where kids of all ages and abilities can play on everything at the park. We often try to integrate kids in the classroom setting, but we are forgetting the main part of being a kid is to play and have fun. Once classes are done for the day the kids that have extra needs can't go play with their peers. It is just not possible with the playgrounds, the woodchips and sand. We integrate them in the school system and then they are segregated again once outside, because of the boundaries of the ground surface and equipment. Another component we sometimes forget is kids that are perfectly "normal" and healthy sometimes have parents with a disability and are wheelchair bound, that too limits them taking their kids to the park to play. Imagine yourself in a wheelchair for one day and how you would do it. Imagine being a child wanting to play more than anything and not being able to because your legs don't work and it is impossible to wheel yourself on a playground with woodchips or sand...and even if you could you will be lucky to find 2 or 3 things to play with." - Angie Shaw - mother of Mateo & McHale Shaw |
